The Backyard Explorer takes a whimsical look at children and the time they spend with their grandparents. In today's busy world grandparents play an active role in child care. In a poetic and colorful look at nature we find that children are eager and curious to learn about our earth and its many wonders. The overall message of the book is that we find simple joy in discovering the blessings in our own backyard.
The book was inspired by the summer days spent with the author Wynette Mill’s oldest grandson Jared (who calls her Nana) when he was seven. On the first day of summer vacation he arrived at the door with his fishing hat upon his head, binoculars around his neck and writing pad in hand. With bright eyes and excitement he informed “Nana,” “we are going to do some bird watching and write stories together,” and so their story begins.
